OSCE Preparation Training – Adult Acute

Accredited by the Royal College of Nursing, our comprehensive 15-day training programme covers all OSCE stations and skills. Whether you are looking to support internationally educated or return to practice Nurses, we provide an opportunity for your Nurses to practise in a simulated environment, enabling deep skill engagement, collaboration and knowledge sharing. 

Our expert clinical educators provide high-quality training, with elements delivered both online and in-person, either on-site or at our hub in Milton Keynes. We empower our trained Nurses for OSCE success, with the vast majority successfully becoming registered Nurses.

Course Overview

Our course can be purchased as a full 15-day programme to cover all stations and skills required by the OSCE test centres. Alternatively, you can purchase any constituent part of the training that you, or your Nurses, may require to pass the formal assessment.

Our timetable below provides details of the subject areas covered on each day of the programme:

Week 1 - Online Acclimatisation (1 day) and written stations (1 day)
Week 2 - In-person APIE* (3 days) and clinical skills (2 days)
Week 3 - In-person Clinical skills (4 days) and mock assessment (1 day)
Week 4 - Online Consolidation (3 days)

*Note APIE stands for Assessment Planning Implementation Evaluation.

On completion of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required for successful completion of the OSCE assessment
  • Prepare confidently for the assessment process
  • Understand and apply the NMC Code to a range of scenarios
  • Appreciate the culture & values of the NHS and Social Care systems
  • Create an individual Personal Development Plan 

We recommend that Nurses stay in serviced apartments close to the training centre in Milton Keynes during the two weeks. These self-contained apartments allow for total focus on the programme and minimise distractions.

  • Assessment Planning Implementation Evaluation (APIE)
  • Practical skills including hand hygiene, mid-stream urine and urinalysis, fluid balance, injections, inhaled medications, resuscitation, drug administration and catheterisation
  • Written skills including evidence-based practice, care planning and medication charts
  • Professional skills including communication, health promotion, ethical and legal, the role of the NMC, managing risk and revalidation
  • Examination preparation including coping strategies, understanding of common causes of failure, and a full 10 station mock exam
  • Formulation of Personal Development Plan
  • A scenario-based station including an Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure (ABCDE) scenarios are pen portraits of patients with specific illnesses such as asthma.
  • Completion of an observation chart i.e. National Early Warning Score (NEWS), Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS).
  • Verbal Situation Background Assessment Recommendations handover to a health professional (the Assessor).
  • Understanding tested on communication skills and the use of the 6 Cs (care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment).
  • A timed, full 10 station mock OSCE, where they are observed individually by a trainer.
  • During the course participants are given lists of common fails for each OSCE station, i.e. ‘not monitoring the time when completing the ANTT skill station’.
  • Participants will use exact replicas of training equipment used in test centres.
  • Our course covers each skill individually, as well as demonstrated to the participants. We also provide clear guidelines on how to have further practice back at their host Trust prior to the examination.
  • Understanding exam criteria by using matrices to help participants understand the expectations and what constitutes a failure.
  • Each participant will receive a PDP to complete, enabling them to identify strengths and weaknesses of each station and actions and resources needed to be best prepared for the OSCE examination.
  • Information from the PDP is shared with the employer, enabling the Trust to support on-going preparation whilst the participant is working before the OSCE test.
